Head of Guitar
Position
Head of Guitar is a full-time position reporting to the SMPAA Director of Music.
Head of Guitar oversees all aspects of the guitar program and manages a faculty of approximately 2 part-time and hourly guitar teachers. All the guitar instructors report directly to Head of Guitar.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach guitar lessons and Administrative work as scheduled per week
- Oversee and develop the curriculum for the guitar program
- Update and/or complete the exam structure for all levels of the guitar program
- Create and administer a strong professional development program for the teachers in the guitar department
- Hold regular and unexpected (if needed) department meetings for all the guitar faculty
- Observe all guitar instructors regularly
- Plan and coordinate the annual teacher evaluation process
- Participate in the hiring process for guitar instructors and arrange their teaching hours (if needed)
- Train new teachers on the curriculum and working process
- Produce guitar recitals (student and teacher) and other performances throughout each year both on and off-campus
- Coordinate and judge guitar student exams at the end of each term
- Proofread all guitar student reports before they are sent to parents and students by the Admissions department at the end of each term
- Discuss and determine term awards along with the Music Curriculum Committee at the end of each term
- Do new guitar student assessments which are scheduled regularly
- Help guide guitar students towards international/national auditions and competitions as well as counsel them through the Pathways Program
- Investigate and resolve any issues involving guitar students, their parents, and their teachers
- Attend the following meetings: weekly Music Department meeting, monthly Music Curriculum meeting, and others as needed
Qualifications
- Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher in guitar performance. A minimum of five years of direct guitar teaching experience is required. Experience with the Trinity, ABRSM, and AMEB international curricula is preferred.
- Ability to work with teachers with different personalities and students at all levels in a variety of musical styles.
- Ability to listen carefully, balance competing demands, and interact with a diverse group of faculty, students, and parents. Candidates must be able to express themselves well in both written and spoken communication.
